Happy Doctor Launches India's First Gratitude Marathon for Doctors

A simple “thank you” has the power to acknowledge years of dedication, sacrifice, and service. With that belief at its core, Happy Doctor officially launched India’s First Gratitude Marathon for Doctors during a press meet held in Chennai, bringing together leading healthcare professionals, academic leaders, and members of the media.

The initiative is more than a marathon. It is a nationwide movement dedicated to recognising the contribution of doctors while encouraging conversations around their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Why the Happy Doctor Marathon Was Created

Every family has a story of a doctor who made a difference during a difficult moment.

Doctors dedicate decades to education, spend countless hours caring for patients, and often place their own health and personal lives behind the needs of others. Yet the emotional and psychological challenges faced by medical professionals often remain invisible.

The Happy Doctor Marathon was created to change that conversation.

Rather than celebrating doctors only during moments of crisis, the initiative encourages society to express appreciation for the people who dedicate their lives to healing others.

The Reality Behind the White Coat

During the launch, organisers highlighted the growing mental health challenges affecting doctors across India.

Research presented during the event noted that many doctors experience burnout, depression, anxiety, and prolonged work-related stress. Medical students and junior doctors continue to work under demanding conditions, with long duty hours and limited structured emotional support.

These realities reinforce why conversations around doctor well-being have become increasingly important—not only for healthcare professionals themselves but also for the future of patient care.

The central message of the launch was clear:

The people who care for the nation’s health deserve care, appreciation, and support in return.

Leaders Unite Behind the Initiative

The launch event brought together respected leaders from healthcare and academia, each reinforcing the importance of supporting doctors beyond their clinical responsibilities.

Mrs. Chitra Baskar, Founder of Redwud Creations, Founder of Happy Doctor, and Organiser of the Gratitude Marathon for Doctors, shared the vision behind the initiative. Through the Happy Doctor movement, she aims to build a nationwide culture of appreciation for doctors while encouraging conversations around their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience working with the healthcare sector, she emphasised that caring for those who care for society is essential to building a stronger healthcare system.

Addressing the gathering, Shri B. Ramachandiran, Founder & Chairman, Ramachandra Educational Trust and Sri Venkateshwara Group of Institutions, Puducherry, and Chancellor of Sri Venkateshwara University, applauded the initiative and highlighted the importance of nurturing not only competent doctors but also healthy, compassionate, and happy medical professionals.

At Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College, we don't just aspire to create successful doctors—we aspire to create healthy doctors, compassionate doctors and, above all, happy doctors.

Sharing his perspective on doctors’ well-being, Prof. Dr. V. Chockalingam, M.D., D.M., D.Sc., F.A.C.C., F.C.C.P., World-Renowned Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, encouraged doctors to prioritise their own health through three simple principles.

Dr. Saravanan Vedhagiri, M.B.B.S., M.S., FICS, Chairman and Managing Director, Girishwari Hospital, reflected on the years of dedication, responsibility, and sacrifice behind every consultation, surgery, emergency, and patient recovery. He called upon society to stand beside doctors with greater gratitude, respect, and support.

Speaking on the broader vision of the initiative, Dr. S.J. Ajeet Arulkumar, M.B.B.S., M.D., DNB, D.M., M.C.R.P. (UK), Interventional Cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, described the Happy Doctor Marathon as a movement that extends beyond a sporting event. He noted that it promotes preventive healthcare, healthier lifestyles, physical fitness, mental well-being, and stronger community engagement.

The event was also attended by Dr. Narasimham Jammi, Director, Jammi Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., whose presence reflected the broader support the initiative has received from leaders across the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

Together, their messages reinforced a common vision: supporting doctors ultimately strengthens healthcare for everyone.

More Than a Marathon

Unlike conventional running events, the Happy Doctor Marathon has been designed as a public expression of gratitude.

It invites doctors, healthcare professionals, families, institutions, students, and members of the public to participate together in celebrating the people who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

At its heart is one simple message:

“Thank You, Doctor.”
