The Happy Doctor Excellence Awards 2026 is a structured, nomination-based recognition programme that honours doctors, AYUSH practitioners, and SME healthcare institutions for meaningful and sustained contributions to healthcare across Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
The programme is associated with the Happy Doctor Marathon but operates as a separate and distinct initiative, with its own nomination process, evaluation methodology. Nominations are assessed against published criteria, and final selections are made through a defined evaluation and jury process.
The Awards do not rank medical competence and do not compare clinical outcomes between practitioners or institutions. They recognise documented, evidence-based contribution — not clinical superiority.
Doctors, AYUSH practitioners, and smaller healthcare institutions across Tamil Nadu frequently contribute to community health, patient care, and medical education without receiving structured, public recognition. Larger hospital groups and well-established practitioners are more visible on existing recognition platforms; independent practitioners and SME institutions often are not.
The Happy Doctor Excellence Awards 2026 exists to close that gap — through a defined, evidence-based process that identifies and honours contribution across community service, patient-centred care, medical education, healthcare innovation, and public health work, for both Allopathic and AYUSH practice.
We have spent years asking how healthcare can be made better. It is worth also asking how the people who deliver it can be supported and recognised. Doctors carry responsibility, uncertainty, long hours, and the emotional weight of caring for others — often without acknowledgement.
Happy Doctor began as a movement built on a simple belief: doctors give a great deal to everyone else, and they deserve, in return, to have that giving noticed, valued, and celebrated. The Happy Doctor Marathon celebrates doctors through participation and gratitude. The Happy Doctor Excellence Awards extend that same belief into formal recognition — evaluated fairly, and grounded in evidence.

Both self-nomination and third-party nomination are accepted. Doctors and AYUSH practitioners may nominate themselves or be nominated by a colleague, institution, or member of the public. Hospitals and institutions may nominate themselves through an authorised representative, or be nominated by a third party with the institution’s knowledge. Every nomination, regardless of source, undergoes the same eligibility screening and evaluation process — a third-party nomination receives no preferential or reduced scrutiny.
Multi-branch institutions are classified by their flagship/head-office address, disclosed at the time of nomination, and may not be nominated under both geographic categories for the same entity. Doctors practising across multiple locations are classified by the primary practice address listed on their professional registration or practice certificate.

For the Doctor Who Makes Healthcare More Human
The highest honour of the Happy Doctor Excellence Awards, presented to one doctor each year. No nomination fee applies to the Happy Doctor Award
Every other category in this programme recognises excellence in a specific area of practice. The Happy Doctor Award recognises something different — a doctor whose presence in the lives of patients, colleagues, and the wider healthcare community has left people genuinely grateful to have known them. It asks a different question than the rest of the programme: not “who is the best doctor,” but “who is the doctor people are grateful to have in their life.”
Because this award is evaluative rather than clinical, and because the programme does not collect or judge on patient testimonials, the Gratitude Award is decided entirely on documented third-party nomination — not on a jury’s personal impression, and not on any claim made by the nominee themselves.
A nominee for the Happy Doctor must be nominated by others — colleagues, mentees, institutions, or community partners — through signed, written nomination letters submitted as part of the nomination package (see Section 8). The evaluation panel scores the documented pattern of these nominations against four dimensions:
What has the doctor consistently given to patients, colleagues, the profession, or the community, as described and evidenced in the nomination letters?
Do the nomination letters describe consistent dignity, kindness, and respect in how the doctor treats people?
Has the doctor's conduct or journey influenced younger doctors, healthcare teams, or the wider community, as evidenced by specific examples in the nominations received?
How many distinct people, and from how many parts of the doctor's professional life (patients' families, junior staff, peers, institutions), have independently put their appreciation in writing?

To be considered, a nomination must meet the following:
The nominee is a registered Allopathic or AYUSH practitioner, or an operating SME healthcare institution, practising or operating in Chennai or Tamil Nadu.
The nomination does not rely on patient testimonials, patient imagery, or claims of treatment outcomes (the Gratitude Award follows its own evidentiary standard).
The nomination is submitted in the correct category and geography, with complete supporting documentation.
The nominee's professional registration or institutional licensing is current and verifiable.

Provide the nominee's details along with all category-specific information.
Complete the applicable nomination fee payment for the selected category.
Upload the required supporting documents, including signed nomination letters where applicable.
Every nomination is carefully reviewed for completeness, eligibility and compliance.
Shortlisted nominations proceed to the independent evaluation panel for final review.
Winners will be invited to the Happy Doctor Excellence Awards presentation on October 4th, 2026.
Nominees are asked to provide evidence supporting the category applied for. This typically includes:
Proof of professional registration (for doctors) or institutional licensing/registration (for institutions)
Proof of primary practice or head-office address, for geographic classification
A short supporting statement describing the nominee's contribution, relevant to the category
Documented evidence of the contribution being nominated for — for example, records of community programmes, patient-care initiatives, teaching or mentorship activity, innovation projects, or public-health work
Signed, written nomination letters from colleagues, mentees, institutions, or community partners, each describing a specific, documented instance of the nominee’s contribution or conduct. Nomination letters should not include identifiable patient information.
Nominations should not include identifiable patient information or images. A detailed, category-specific document checklist is provided within the nomination form at the time of submission. Nominations lacking required documentation will not proceed to evaluation, but may be corrected and resubmitted up to two times.
Every nomination is first checked for eligibility — correct category, complete documentation, and verified registration or institutional details. Eligible nominations are then reviewed against the published evaluation criteria for that category.
What evaluation considers, where relevant to the category:
Evidence of sustained contribution
Professional and ethical standards of practice
Patient-centred approach, as reflected in documented practice standards
Community or public-health impact
Innovation in care delivery or education
Leadership within a professional or institutional context
Consistency of service over time
Specific weighting and evidence requirements vary by category and are published at the category level before nominations close. The Gratitude Award follows its own published criteria, set out in Section 5.1, based on the documented pattern of third-party nomination rather than category-specific practice evidence.
Shortlisted nominations are assessed by the evaluation panel named in Section 10. Panel members are required to declare any conflict of interest and recuse themselves from evaluating a nomination where one exists. The organisers do not select winners directly — final selection is made by the evaluation panel based on submitted evidence and published criteria.
The nomination fee, where applicable, covers eligibility screening, documentation review, and evaluation. It does not guarantee shortlisting, selection, or winning.
